Why Summer Is One of the Best Times to Start Martial Arts

For kids, adults, and anyone ready to challenge themselves.

When most people think about summer, they think about vacations, staying up late, and taking a break from routine.

We think summer is one of the best opportunities to grow.

At Strickland’s Martial Arts, summer is one of our favorite times of year to welcome new students — both kids and adults — because it gives people something rare:

Time to build momentum.

Summer Gives Kids a Chance to Grow

For many kids, summer means less structure. School is out. Bedtimes drift later. Screens start taking over. Days begin to blend together.

Martial arts gives kids something productive to work toward while school is on break.

  • Routine

  • Discipline

  • Physical activity

  • Confidence

  • Positive social interaction

Unlike many summer activities, martial arts builds skills that stay with them long after summer ends.

Confidence Before the School Year Starts

One of the biggest things we see every year is kids walking into school differently after a summer of martial arts training.

Not because they suddenly became aggressive, but because they became more confident, focused, and resilient under pressure.

More Confident / More Focused / More Resilient/ More Comfortable / Speaking Up

Martial arts helps children get comfortable being challenged — and overcoming those challenges.

Summer Is Also the Perfect Time for Adults

Adults often tell themselves they’ll start “when life slows down.” But life rarely slows down on its own.

Summer can be one of the easiest times to begin because people often have:

  • More daylight

  • More energy

  • More flexibility in schedules

  • More motivation to get active again

It is also easier to build consistency before fall and winter routines return.

You Do Not Need to “Get in Shape First”

This is one of the biggest misconceptions we hear. People think they need to already be athletic before starting martial arts.

You don’t.

Martial arts is what helps you get stronger, improve conditioning, move better, build coordination, and gain confidence.

Everyone starts somewhere. The hardest part is usually just walking through the door the first time.

More Than Just Exercise

Yes, martial arts improves fitness. But it also gives people something many workouts don’t:

Purpose.

Every class has goals. Every skill has progression. Every challenge teaches something.

Instead of just “working out,” students are learning, improving, and accomplishing something tangible every week.

Training for Real Life

At Strickland’s Martial Arts, our programs are designed to help students become more capable both mentally and physically.

Taekwondo / Muay Thai — Movement, discipline, timing, and control

Eskrima /Kali — Awareness, weapon understanding, and reaction under pressure

Jun Fan/ Silat — Close-range control, grappling, and practical self-defense

Whether someone trains for fitness, confidence, competition, or self-defense, the lessons carry over into everyday life.

Start Strong This Summer

There is never a “perfect” time to begin. But summer gives people a chance to reset, build healthy habits, and challenge themselves in a positive way.

For kids, it can build confidence before the school year starts. For adults, it can be the beginning of feeling stronger, healthier, and more capable again.

And for everyone, it can be the start of something bigger than just learning martial arts.

Ready to Begin?

Whether you are looking for a positive activity for your child or a new challenge for yourself, summer is a great time to step onto the mat!

Being a student is tough work.
