Grandmaster Bobby Taboada is a highly regarded Filipino martial artist and one of the major figures in Balintawak Eskrima, particularly the system known as Taboada Balintawak or Taboada Balintawak Arnis Cuentada.

Who he is

Grandmaster Bobby Taboada was raised in Cebu City, Philippines, with its thriving martial arts culture and the birthplace of Balintawak.

After studying karate, boxing, and other fighting arts, GM Taboada was introduced to the arts of Balintawak and Arnis.

Balintawak is often associated with one stick, usually a rattan stick approximately 28 inches long, and fighting at very close range. Instead of primarily learning long sequences of predetermined techniques, students spend a tremendous amount of time working with a partner who feeds attacks and forces them to react.

GM Bobby Taboada is associated with the development and international spread of his Balintawak system.

  • One of the most important concepts is progressive partner training with a single stick (fighting)

    • Timing — learning when to move and counter

    • Distance — understanding extremely close fighting range

    • Reflexes — responding without consciously selecting a technique

    • Angles — recognizing and exploiting lines of attack

    • Counters — learning to respond to an opponent's response

    • Trapping — controlling the opponent's weapon or limb

    • Disarms — taking control of the opponent's weapon

    • Locks and takedowns

    • Footwork and body positioning

    • Flow — continuously transitioning between attacks, defenses, and counters

His system is generally identified as Taboada Balintawak Arnis Cuentada. He has been recognized within the broader Balintawak community as one of the senior masters responsible for teaching and spreading the art internationally. Historical seminar records list him alongside other prominent Balintawak masters at major "Gathering of Masters" events.

His importance in Balintawak

Balintawak is a Filipino martial art originating in Cebu, Philippines, and is particularly known for its close-quarters single-stick training. Rather than simply teaching a collection of techniques, many Balintawak systems use progressive feeding, reaction, countering, and flow drills to develop timing and adaptability.

Taboada's approach became influential enough that instructors around the world have trained under or with him.

There are also Taboada World Camps, where GM Bobby has taught seminars and conducted testing for practitioners.

One interesting distinction

You'll sometimes see the name spelled Taboada and occasionally Taboata in online references. The martial art is most commonly identified as Taboada Balintawak, although some sources use "Taboata." The historical sources use both spellings, so it's worth being careful when researching his lineage.

Why he matters

Balintawak's repetitive partner drills are designed to progressively turn a known response into something more spontaneous under pressure.

GM Bobby Taboada system matters because his Balintawak represents a training methodology built around pressure, reaction, timing, and adaptability rather than simply collecting techniques. That makes his material especially interesting when looking at the difference between "learning techniques" and "developing fighting skills." His theories are practiced here at Strickland’s martial arts because they a relevant.

Being a student is tough work.
