He has been instructing since 2007, teaching silat in different parts of the world, from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia. To date, he invest almost 80 percent of his weekends traveling and teaching SSBD around the globe.
What id SSBD?
SSBD (Silat Suffian Bela Diri) is a martial art that originated in Brunei and focuses primarily on bladed combat. It is believed to be related to other Silat styles that are practiced in Indonesia and Malaysia: Maul himself admits to have little knowledge of those other styles, and that what he practices and teaches is a direct lineage from his family.
Bruneian martial arts are not well known and everyone has their own general visualization in their minds on how silat movements tends to be represented. But not many understands that silat is only a general term to cover the actual fighting methods and that there are thousands of styles with subtle differences from all over southeast Asia. People tend to categorize what silat is, what it should be, and how it should be trained, however every country in southeast Asia has its own history and culture.
Maul currently has practitioners from 14 different countries who study and physically train under him, including Strickland’s Martial Arts.
Maul currently resides in Cardiff, Wales in the UK, where he travel out from when he isn’t at home in Brunei (once every 3 months for 6 weeks to be with family) to conduct seminars and classes all over the world. We look forward to hosting Maul here again in Flower Mound this November 2025 for yet another exciting seminar.
